Believe it or not, the 2020 Democratic Presidential Primary is coming up sooner than we think. In less than five months, North Carolinian voters registered as Democrats will head to the ballot boxes to chose which candidate will take on Donald Trump in the general election. Whether they realize it or not, almost all of the senior class and even some members of the junior class will be eligible to vote in the March 3rd primary. In North Carolina, all 17-year-olds who will turn 18 before November 3rd, 2020 are allowed to vote in the Democratic presidential primary if they are registered to vote, and are registered as a democrat. Students who are registered as “unaffiliated” from a political party will also be allowed to vote in the 2020 Democratic Presidential Primary due to the fact that North Carolina is a semi-closed primary state.

Traditionally, Durham is a liberal city. In the last presidential election, 77.7% of Durham residents voted Democrat, 18.2% Republican, and 4.2% as independents. That being said, if Jordan’s student population is as Democrat-heavy as the rest of Durham, hundreds of current Jordan students ought to be heading to the polls on March 3rd to practice their civic duty.

There is still a large field of Democrats in the running for the presidential nomination. As of right now, there are two clear front runners in the national polls, Joe Biden and Elizabeth Warren, but there remains a strong field of candidates lingering behind them. Candidates such as Bernie Sanders, Pete Buttigieg, Kamala Harris, Andrew Yang, and more are biting at the heels of the frontrunners in an election where the nomination is surely still up for grabs.

With all of these candidates, it can be hard to choose one to support. But when March rolls around, our senior class and some members of the junior class will have the opportunity to make a choice.

There are a lot of polls out there that survey almost every aspect of the population. However, it is unrecorded which candidate is the favorite among Jordan High School students. With the online poll attached to the bottom of this article, the Falcon Post will attempt to provide an answer to this question.

We would like to ask all current Jordan High School students, regardless of age or grade, to pick their favorite candidate by filling out the poll attached to this article. Even if you have not been following this election at all, we encourage you to participate in this poll. The more students we have participate, the more accurate of a number we can obtain.

If you would like to have more information about the candidates before you make your choice and fill out the poll, feel free to follow the links below and read a little about each of the candidates.
