Jordan High School is considering adding girls’ flag football to their athletic offerings in the future. Flag football interest meetings were held recently at Jordan, Hillside, Riverside, Northern, Southern, and DSA, indicating potential seasons to come with options for competition.
Jordan’s own interest meeting was quite successful, with 34 potential athletes in attendance. Jaylin Harris (‘27), who attended the meeting, described, “I feel like the interest level was pretty high for everyone, because people were paying attention and asking questions.”
Durham County is considering organizing a short season at the end of this year, with a few weeks of practice and an all-county event. Next year, girls’ flag football could occupy a full sports season, with a league formed of competitors in Durham and expanding into Mecklenburg and Wake counties.
Valerie Batta (‘25), who plans to play on the girls’ flag football team as well as the football team, hopes that “it expands a lot more nationally and girls get their chance to prove that they can compete.”
Girls’ flag football has been on the rise in North Carolina, since Mecklenburg and Wake counties have rolled out their programs. Citing the newfound success of girls’ flag football programs in NC, Jordan’s athletic director Joseph Sharrow stated, “I think the sport is only going to grow as time goes on… Durham is going to be next in showcasing this exciting new sport.”
The potential addition of girls’ flag football is another example of the work that Jordan’s athletic department is doing to meet interests of the student body. The newly formed boys’ volleyball club as well as last year’s Powderpuff (girls’ flag football) event showcased the expansions that the athletic department worked hard to implement.
On the new possibility of girls’ flag football, Mr. Sharrow stated, “I feel as though I have a duty to explore new athletic opportunities that arise.”
