Jordan students participate in walkout to advocate for trans rights



On Tuesday, October 29th during third period, some Jordan students opted to file out of class and onto the track in protest of a North Carolina Senate bill that has negative effects on transgender and nonbinary students. Approximately 500 students gathered on the bleachers, and a Jordan senior gave a brief speech encouraging students to consider the implications of this bill and fight for change. Many other NC schools staged walkouts at the same time, organized by Shine NC. Jordan’s walkout was led by our queer alliance club.


Senate Bill 49 was enacted in August 2023, and it requires teachers to tell transgender students’ parents about name or pronoun changes. This may lead to teachers outing students to their parents. The bill also prevents discussion of sexuality or gender identity until after 4th grade.


The large turnout at Jordan’s walkout provides a hopeful sign for the future. Any Falcon hoping to make a further difference can sign this petition:
