Student Opinion: The 2025 Grammys

February 2nd was a big day for music artists in America. Hosted in Los Angeles, the 2025 Grammys was a hub for successful artists to be rewarded for their work over this past year, including performances from artists like Doechii, Sabrina Carpenter, Chappell Roan, Charli XCX, and more. This year in particular seemed to spark a lot of controversy about who deserved the awards. Here are the winners, and what a poll of Jordan students says instead.

Starting off strong is Song of the Year. Kendrick Lamar’s song, “Not Like Us,” which skyrocketed on the charts almost as soon as it was released, had the honor of being granted this title. This song’s vibe is definitely more hype, being a diss track with many catchy lines that make you want to try out your own rapping skills. Many people love Kendrick but think that there is a better song that deserved to win because of the emotion and overall grace of the song. This, of course, is Billie Elish’s “Bird of a Feather.” Billie Eilish did not win any Grammy awards this year, but in Jordan’s heart, she did. Similarly, Kendrick also won Record of the Year, which is centered more on what goes on behind the lyrics, commending the creation of the music. Students were close on this decision, with three artists tying for the spot. We liked the catchy pop sides of “Espresso,” the beautiful vocals and story of “Good Luck Babe,” and of course, Kendrick’s energy.

Album of the Year was taken by Beyonce’s “COWBOY CARTER,” which also won Best Country Album. Beyonce continues to amaze audiences with her catchy lyrics and compelling storytelling, even in a new genre! But does Jordan agree? While many people love Beyonce—there's no reason not to— they feel like “HIT ME HARD AND SOFT” deserved the spotlight.

The final category surveyed was Best New Artist. People seemed to agree with the Grammys in this category the most, commending Chappell Roan’s hard work over the past year. She is an artist who has received a lot of love, but also a lot of hate, and came out strong.

There are many other opinions, such as disputes over whether Beyonce’s album was really country enough to win, but all in all, we will always have unique opinions from our peers.

Beyoncé deserved album of the year. People need to stop settling for mediocre music and start appreciating actual talent. Beyoncé is way more talented than all the nominees. A black woman has not won this award since Lauryn hill 1999. The moment a talented black women wins people are upset? That says a lot about our society. On top of that half of the people that “didn’t like” cowboy carter has never listened to the album and or doesn’t understand the importance behind each lyric and meaning.
