Welcome to the W: Semifinals Recap

The semifinals of the WNBA Playoffs came to a conclusion last night with the Minnesota Lynx’s (2) dominant game five victory over the Connecticut Sun (3). This was just two days after the New York Liberty (1) finished off MVP A’ja Wilson and the Las Vegas Aces (4) in game four on the road. Now, the New York Liberty (1) are staged to play the Minnesota Lynx (2) in a five-game series starting tomorrow. This will be a rematch of the Commissioner’s Cup Championship, which the Lynx won, back in June.

The semifinals were played in a best-of-five format, with the first two games at the home of the higher seed, the second two games at the home of the lower seed, and the fifth game back at the home of the higher seed.

Recap of the Semifinals:

• Breanna Stewart and the New York Liberty (1) easily won their game four matchup against the Las Vegas Aces (4) after a tough loss on the road in game three and a close game two. W 87-77, W 88-84, L 95-81, W 76-62.

• The Minnesota Lynx (2), led by Napheesa Collier, narrowly escaped the Connecticut Sun, who kept the series close. The Sun won the first game of the series on the road, which the Lynx responded to with back-to-back wins. The Lynx then went on to handily win game five, holding the lead starting four and a half minutes into the game. L 73-0, W 77-70, W 90-81, L 92-82, W 88-77.

The Playoff Finals of the WNBA’s 28th season will also follow a best-of-five format. The Liberty’s regular season record was 32-8 and the Lynx’s was 30-10. Who will hold the trophy this time?

The Liberty host game one at 8:00 on ESPN tomorrow night, October 10.
